野生動物の生と死の見つめ方を知ることは、人間として生きる上でとても参考になります。
近年、自然が激減してライオン達は狩りが難しくなり、オスも群に加わる場面が増えているようです。
ある時オスライオンが、ちょっと邪魔と蹴飛ばした子どもが死んでしまった。
子どもを殺されたメスは異常とも言える怒りをあらわし、その後、死体を愛おしげに舐めた…。そして、とうとうその身体をかじりだした…。ゆっくりと…悲しげに…愛おしげに…。
法律も制度もない生き物の世界では、生き物はその場に応じて自分で行動します。そこには迷いも間違いもあるが、動かしようのない真面目さがあります。
象の行進には多くの動物が道を譲るが、自分の場所を離れたがらないガゼルがいる時だけは、象の方が横にそれるそうです。
自分自身の巨大な力を知りそれに対して、他者に被害を与えてはいけないという気持ちが外に現れています。
また、ガゼルの方はチーターに狙われながらもギリギリまで逃げず、その場を精一杯楽しみ、食べ、遊ぶ…。その生の時間こそ、彼らにとって大切なのです。
科学的な分析はなく、数値もない。観察者の主観に満ち、ライオンが小さな身体をかじるのを、愛おしげで悲しげと見るのは思い入れだと切り捨てることもできます。
現代文明が、解析可能なものしか存在しないとしてきたために失なったものの大きさを実感します。
大自然というものの役目を見直した時、自分自身が鮮やかに描き出されるのではないでしょうか。
